Struggle for the Vote: New York Women

  Organizations

A. ECS and SBA (Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony)- These women were heads of groups that led the fight against slavery, alcohol, child labor, unequal pay, and unsafe working conditions. They would combine to form the American Equal Rights Association.

B. Women’s Christian Temperance Union (WCTU)- Founded by Annie Wittennyer in 1874, they helped with the suffrage movement. They were for prohibition (the illegalization of alcohol).

C. National Women’s Party (Congressional Union)- Founded by Alice Pauland Lucy Burns in 1913. They participated in hunger strikes, picketing the White House, and other forms of civil disobedience. They proposed the Equal Rights Amendment, with the hopes to eliminate discrimination, based on gender, in

1923. It has never been passed.

D. Bull Moose Party- When Theodore Roosevelt was running for President they became the first party to support suffrage as part of their platform.

E. National Federation of Women’s Clubs- Made up of 2 million white and colored women. They formally endorsed the suffrage campaign in 1914.

F. Women’s Trade Union League of NY- Founded by Mary Drier, Rheta Childe-Dorr, and Leonora O’Reilly in 1903. They were an organization of middle class and working class women, dedicated to the unionization of working women and women’s suffrage. Their goal was to organize and educate women about the advantage of trade union membership, as well as fight for better working

conditions and to raise awareness about the exploitation of women workers.

G. League of Women Voters- This organization brought together women voters, of all different political groups, and encouraged them to be informed and active participants in their government. This group is still active and is taking on some of the tougher issues that face U.S. Citizens today.

H. American Equal Rights Association- Formed by ECS and SBA in 1866 and lasted through 1869. They wanted to secure Equal Rights, mainly that of suffrage, for all U.S. citizens regardless of sex, race, or color.

I. National Women’s Suffrage Association (NWSA)- Founded in 1869, led by Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony. After the civil war the women’s suffrage movement split into 2 different groups, the NWSA and the AWSA. This division occurred because of the passing of the 15th Amendment. The 15th gave the right to vote to all men, regardless or race, but still not to women. The

supporters of the NWSA did not support the 15th Amendment because women were excluded.

J. American Women’s Suffrage Association (AWSA)- Founded in 1869, led by Lucy Stone, her husband, Henry Blackwell, and Julia Ward Howe. The supporters of the AWSA supported the 15th Amendment and campaigned for the passage of state laws to enfranchise women.

K. National American Women’s Suffrage Association (NAWSA)- In 1890 NWSA and AWSA merged to form NAWSA. Susan B. Anthony became their president and she retired in 1900. With the passing of the 19th Amendment, in 1920, the NAWSA ceased to exist, they joined the League of Women Voters.

L. Women’s National Liberal Union (WNLU)- Established by Matilda Gage in 1890. This organization was more radical, attacked religion, and published the journal The Liberal Thinker.
