Review with the students the information discussed in the

students to think about what life was like for a soldier in the
Union and Confederate Armies, during battles and in camps. Have
students compose a letter to a family member or a friend describing
their experiences as a soldier. Include descriptive information
about time of year, weather, location, conditions of equipment,
health, traveling, friendships and other stories of daily life. Some
other question to think about:
-
Did you meet anyone of interest? Did you
see anyone you know?
-
What items did you bring with you?
-
Did you fight in any battles? If so,
which one? What was fighting in a battle like?
-
What were the towns you traveled through
like?
Encourage your students to add
descriptive drawings to the letter, to enhance their story.
