The Civil War Pre Visit Lesson

For Grades 8 - 12

Learning Outcomes:

Students will:

Create a broadside persuading men from the Union or the Confederate States of America to enlist in the army.

Use knowledge of history and who, what, when, where, and how to advertise.

Incorporate graphic design and visual art skills into the creation of a broadside.

Teacher Planning:

Time required for lesson: 45 – 60 minutes (can be finished for a homework research assignment)

Materials/resources: School Library, Computer Lab, Sketch paper, Final Copy Paper (18 x 24), Drawing pencils, Markers/colored pencils/crayons/paint/brushes, Magazines, Newspapers, Scissors

Technology resources: Computers, Internet and printer (if needed)

Activity 1:

Begin a discussion about the function of a broadside. What are they? Does our contemporary society use anything like a broadside today? Introduce the idea of a military draft to the class. What happens when there are not enough people volunteering for military service?

Activity 2:

Have students create their own broadside for military volunteers during the early 1860s. On the planning paper, have the students develop a first draft of how information will appear in the advertisement.

            Information including:

§        How many volunteers are needed?

§        Who is recruiting?

§        How long will you serve as a soldier?

§        Will you be paid?

§        Where would a volunteer go to enlist?

§        When could a volunteer enlist?

§        Pictures

           Other Information to Consider:

§       Is all the text the same size?

§       Is any of the text bold?

§       Is all of the text the same font (look the same)?

§       Is the text spaced out or close together?

§       What impression does that have on whomever

                           is reading the text?

Next, have each student create his or her advertisement on large paper using a variety of materials, including rulers, crayons, markers, colored pencils for a final copy.

Assessment: Students may be evaluated on understanding, implementation and participation of the activity.
