The Civil War Pre Visit Lesson
For Grades
8 - 12
Learning Outcomes:
Students will:
Create a broadside persuading men from the Union or the Confederate
States of America to enlist in the army.
Use knowledge of history and who, what, when, where, and how to
advertise.
Incorporate graphic design and visual art skills into the creation
of a broadside.
Teacher Planning:
Time required
for lesson: 45 – 60 minutes (can be finished for a homework
research assignment)
Materials/resources: School Library, Computer Lab, Sketch paper,
Final Copy Paper (18 x 24), Drawing pencils,
Markers/colored pencils/crayons/paint/brushes, Magazines,
Newspapers, Scissors
Technology
resources: Computers, Internet and printer (if needed)
Activity 1:
Begin a
discussion about the function of a broadside. What are they? Does
our contemporary society use anything like a broadside today?
Introduce the idea of a military draft to the class. What happens
when there are not enough people volunteering for military service?
Activity 2:
Have students create their own broadside
for military volunteers during the early 1860s. On the planning
paper, have the students develop a first draft of how information
will appear in the advertisement.

How long will you serve as a soldier?

Will you be paid?

Where would a volunteer go to enlist?

When could a volunteer enlist?

Is the text spaced out or close together?

What impression does that have on whomever
is
reading the text?
Next, have each
student create his or her advertisement on large paper using a
variety of materials, including rulers, crayons, markers, colored
pencils for a final copy.
Assessment:
Students may be evaluated on understanding, implementation and
participation of the activity.
