RESPONDING TO ART

Introduction

Art often evokes strong emotional responses from viewers.  A lush green landscape might bring a person back to summers spent in the countryside, while a lovingly rendered portrait of a child might remind another of her dearest friend.

“Responding to Art” offers students in fourth through eighth grade a method for looking at—and engaging with—the works they might encounter during any museum visit.  When students arrive at AIHA, they will be guided through a three-step viewing process that encourages them to notice subtleties, ask questions and form opinions about artworks.

As students hone their observation skills, they will find themselves better able to articulate their instinctive responses to art.

The accompanying materials are designed to function either as “icebreakers” to ease students into the process of critical viewing or as “follow-ups” to reinforce concepts introduced during the visit.
