Charles Loring Elliot (1812-1868)
Emma Turner Banks (1835-1866)
[Mrs. Robert Lenox Banks]
Oil on canvas, 1864
AIHA Collection: Bequest of Effie Hunter Keays Banks [Mrs. Robert Lenox Banks, Jr.]

This painting is a companion piece to a portrait of the sitter's husband, businessman Robert Lenox Banks, who was the secretary of the New York Central Railroad. The two portraits were painted while Elliottwas in Albany during the winter of 1863-64 to paint a portrait of Erastus Corning I (1794-1872). Elliot probably received the commission through the Corning family connections since Robert Banks was in business with Corning and Emma Banks was Corning's niece.

A leading New York City portrait painter at mid 19th century, Charles Loring Elliot was known for his realistic, naturalisic style. Elliot moved his residence to Albany but died in 1868 before he ever occupied his studio there.
