AIHA Collection: Gift of the New York Central Railroad

The Twentieth Century Limited was a newly designed locomotive built in 1926-27. After months of road testing, locomotive #5200 was in service by July 1927 and ran until April 1953. Between 1927 and 1931, more than 200 of this type of locomotive were built. This painting depicts three sections of the Twentieth Century Limited ready to leave the LaSalle Street Station in Chicago.

From 1922-1931 the New York Central Railroad distributed calendars featuring illustrations of the Twentieth Century Limited to its employees and customers. Walter L. Greene, who lived in Schenectady, New York in 1920, was chief illustrator from 1925-1931.
