CONTEMPORARY REGIONAL ART

Etoile Variation V
George Rickey

stainless steel, 1978
AIHA Collection

Etoile Variation V was a gift to the Albany Institute in 1987 from the artist in honor of the museum’s expansion and is permanently installed in the new glass atrium; it is an outstanding example for Rickey’s work. Rickey’s sculptures are kinetic, incorporating actual movement as governing element. Originally exhibited outdoors, the sculpture is a series of hinged, wing-like metal planes designed to move gently in reaction to air currents.

Etoile Variation V was first exhibited in Rickey’s first retrospective exhibition at the Guggenheim Museum in New York City in 1978 and more recently, in Albany at the University Art Museum in 1994 as part of the exhibition, Democratic Vistas: 150 Years of American Art from Regional Collections.
