CONTEMPORARY REGIONAL ART
Bear Totem
Don Nice
Oil on canvas, 1984
AIHA Collection
Don Nice's concerns as an artist reflect the concerns of his generation: abstract versus real, the illusion of space versus its denial in the traditional
two-dimensional form of the painting, and the use of objects as signs or signifiers of reality. In
Bear Totem and other works, the use of natural elements such as bears, birds, squirrels, and fruit in tandem with candy wrappers, lost tennis shoes and other debris, has earned him a reputation as an "environmental" artist.
Nice holds a B.F.A. from the University of Southern California and an M.F.A. from Yale University. He has held a variety of teaching positions around the country and has exhibited his work in over 100 exhibitions. His work is represented in public collections including the Delaware Art Museum, Minneapolis Museum of Art, Museum of Modern Art, Walker Art Center, Whitney Museum of Art, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
