The consistory chest was built for the storage of the business and financial records of Albany's North Dutch Reformed Church (now known as the First Church of Albany). As the church grew during the eighteenth century, the Consistory (temporal leaders of the Church) assumed greater responsibility for increasingly complex secular affairs of the church, ranging from maintaining its buildings to managing its landholdings around the city.
