Kiddush Cup

This ceremonial cup was presented to Jacob Labishiner (1813-1886), a teacher, by the Congregation Anshe Emeth of Albany. The cup is a symbol of personal religious beliefs as well as community esteem for a preserver of German Jewish culture in 19th century America. Jacob and Bertha Labishiner and their three children came from what is today Poland, settling in the South End of Albany in 1853. The Labishiners were part of the migration of approximately one million Germans who came to America during the mid 19th century in search of social, economic, religious and political freedom. The family became part of a growing Jewish community, joining the Reform Temple Anshe Emeth as well as ethnic fraternal orders and mutual aid societies.
