This portrait descended in the Van Rensselaer Family to Howard Van Rensselaer. It was acquired from his estate by Benjamin Walworth Arnold in 1925 and then descended to his daughter, Dorothy Arnold Cogswell Provenance

This is probably a portrait of Jacobus Van Rensselaer, formerly identified as Killiaen Van Rensselaer. Jacobus was the son of Killiaen, the fourth patroon and second lord of the Manor of Rensselaerswyck, and his wife, Maria Van Cortlandt. He is the brother of Jan Baptist Van Rensselaer (1717-1763).
