Vacation Art Break and ARTFUL MORNINGS | Education Programs 2024

Calling all young artists, ages six through twelve! Join us at the Albany Institute for fun, hands-on activities led by our museum educators. Prepare to learn new things, experiment with new ideas and connect with new people.

Throughout school breaks and the summer we will explore the galleries at the Albany Institute and create our own works of arts!  Topics are divided by week with ages 9-12 on Tuesday-Thursday and ages 6-8 on Friday.

Ages 6-8 Artful Morning Summer Program sessions will take Friday mornings from 9:00 AM —12:00 PM and will take place in the museum's Art Studio.

Registration for each session will be closed at 4:00 the day before the program for administrative purposes.

Refunds: If needed refunds will be issued for a cancellation.

F.A.Q.s

  • The doors to the museum will open approximately 10 minutes before the program's start time.
  • All required materials are included with the registration fee.
  • Please dress for mess!  Smocks/aprons are available, and you're welcome to provide your own if desired.
  • A snack break will be offered (outdoors when the weather is amenable).

  • If at least 3 registrations have not been received 1 week beforehand a session will be canceled.
  • Registration for each session will be closed the day before the program for administrative purposes.

Create Your Own Time Capsule | April 2 – April 4 and April 5th

Do you know what was found in the time capsule that was under the Philip Schuyler Statue?  This week our young and budding historians will explore the artifacts and stories immortalized in the Albany time capsule.  We will create our own jewelry, postcards, and miniature portraits to put in our own time capsules.  Our historians will also be sent home with a sheet to fill out about themselves and their family to capture their story for future generations to uncover.

Colorful World of Animals | July 9 - July 11 and July 12th

Hunt Slonem was inspired by the native animals of Mexico and Nicaragua while he was in art school.  Portraying parrots and toucans in beautiful bold colors and ocelots with vibrant backgrounds, Hunt uses color to make the animals pop off the canvas.  Join us for the week as we explore the different colors, techniques, and mediums Hunt used to represent the animals that marvel the world.

Exploring Early Albany | July 16 - July 18 and July 19th

The early Dutch settlers of Albany were inspired by different cultures in the 1600’s.  Join us as we explore how Chinese ceramics, English customs, and contact with Native Americans helped create a unique Albany identity.  This week we will make our own decorative tiles using clay, create our own family crests with paint, and make our own silver trade tokens.

What A Colorful World | July 23 - July 25 and July 26th

Whether Hunt Slonem is painting a rabbit, flowers, or a landscape, he uses bright colors.  This week we will explore the importance of light and how different colors can change your mood.  We will explore the wonderful world of color as we paint animals and landscapes in both bold and dark colors.

Flowers; From the Garden, Sweet Friend | July 30-August 1 and August 2nd

For thousands of years, flowers have been adored for their beauty and symbolism. Join us as we explore the flowers of Ancient Egypt, flowers painted by Thomas Cole in the 1800’s, and flowers painted by Hunt Slonem in 2023. Our budding artists will paint flowers on different mediums from clay to canvas this week.

A Changing Wilderness Week 1 | August 6 - August 8 and August 9th

The artists of the Hudson River School painted the changing wilderness they witnessed in real time.  This week we will explore how people’s presence changed the American landscape.  Young artists will create a two-dimensional and three-dimensional landscape showing the impact we have had on nature.

A Changing Wilderness Week 2 | August 13- August 15 and August 16th

In the second week of exploring the artists of the Hudson River School, we will explore how communities began and grew.  We will see the landscape change with the expansion of towns.  This week young artists will explore the reflection of buildings using watercolors, sketch outside and paint what we see from the lawn of the Albany Institute.

Exploring the Afterlife in Ancient Egypt | August 20 – August 22 and August 23rd

Join us as we take our young, budding Egyptologists on a journey to the afterlife.  We will explore the myths surrounding the gods of the afterlife, mummification, and the Book of the Dead.  After our afterlife adventure, we will create our own beaded face mask and jewelry based on the pieces in the Albany Institute Ancient Egypt Collection.

Daily Life for an Ancient Egyptian Priest | August 27 - August 29 and August 30th

Discover what the daily life for priest Ankhefenmut was like over 3,000 years ago in Ancient Egypt.  What did he wear?  What were his jobs around the Temple of Mut?  What did he eat?  Join us as we explore Ankhefenmut’s world and create some of the tools he used like the sistrum, and a reproduction mummified animal.
