HOME SCHOOL PROGRAM

Drawing & Color

Discover how to make skillfully composed drawings from simple objects. Explore the use of color and learn how to render light and shadow.

A $15 fee per child includes museum admission and art materials. On the first Friday of each month, the Albany Institute remains open until 9:00 pm and admission to our galleries is free as part of 1st Fridays, the downtown arts walk that showcases the thriving and lively art scene in downtown Albany. TEACHER WORKSHOPS

Art and Nature: The Hudson River School Paintings

This workshop is based on the Albany Institute's holdings of 19th century American landscape tradition known as the Hudson River School. Teachers will be introduced to the collection by Tammis Groft, Deputy Director for Collections and Exhibitions.

Open to New York State educators of all grade levels. Teachers attending workshops will be introduced to AIHA exhibitions, collections and other curriculum-related content by the Education Department staff, and receive teacher materials relating to Social Studies, Visual Arts and English Language Arts NYS Standards. Admission FREE for New York State Teachers.

Victorian Paper Cuts

Inspired by the Victorian Era of design and passion for detail, learn how to create a Victorian shadow paper-cut.

Intergenerational programs for children ages 6-12 and accompanying adults, with gallery activities and art making.  Programs start at 2:30 in the galleries followed by art making in the studio. FREE with museum admission.

Embossed Metal

This class will employ basic metalworking techniques by embossing lines and textures into a soft metal. Participants will apply geometric principles including diameter, radius, and symmetry to make an artistic design.

Stamps & Correspondence

Look more in depth at Victorian designs found in galleries. Choose a design to sketch and follow with printing techniques to create a stamp. Create your own stationary and letters by using decorative papers and folding methods.
