Volunteer Program

Education Department Volunteer

Education

The education office is responsible for developing, implementing, and evaluating a wide range of programs offered to the general public, including school programs, family programs, lectures, films, and gallery talks.

  • Administrative support

Education office volunteers assist with mailings, reservations, confirmation letters, data entry, and other projects.  Knowledge of Microsoft Office is helpful.

Time commitment:  Flexible hours, Monday-Friday, ideally once a week.

  • Docents: school lessons (curriculum-based):  weekdays

Weekday docents conduct lessons for school groups during the week from September-May.  Training, which is held on Monday mornings, begins in September.  Previous teaching/guiding/public speaking experience is helpful, as is knowledge/interest in history and art history and ability to work with diverse groups of people.

Time commitment: Training sessions take place for three hours per week over a 10-week period.  Following completion of training, weekday docents work flexible hours, Tuesday-Friday; attend monthly docent meetings; and commit to a minimum of 8 hours per month.

·         Docents/tour guides: weekends

The museum presents a variety of tours, gallery talks, and family programs on weekends throughout the year. Weekend docents lead tours and gallery talks for both the general public and groups on Saturdays and Sundays, and assist with family programs.  Previous teaching/guiding/public speaking experience is helpful, as is knowledge/interest in history and art history and ability to work with diverse groups of people.

Time commitment: Training sessions take place once a month for 2 hours on Saturday mornings.  Following completion of training, weekend docents work flexible hours, Saturdays and Sundays and commit to a minimum of 3 hours per month.

  • Museum Learning Initiative

The Museum Learning Initiative (MLI) was established to strengthen and expand the educational use of museum resources in the schools of the Upper Hudson Region.  MLI volunteers will work to put together a clearinghouse document of local museum resources, conduct interviews with educators, and administer surveys.  Computer skills, particularly with Microsoft Office and the internet are helpful, as are strong research and communication skills.

Time commitment: Flexible hours, Monday-Friday; should commit to a regular schedule of volunteer hours.
