Library Volunteer


Library

All volunteer positions in the library require a minimum of 3 hours per week with flexible scheduling between the hours of Monday - Friday 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

  • Bibliography Volunteer

Create bibliographies and other pathfinders on specified research topics.  Search the AIHA Library holdings for pertinent materials. Interest in local history, art, and culture. Previous research experience. Ability to use basic office equipment such as computers, printers, photocopiers, and typewriters. 

·         Book Processing Volunteer

Photocopy title pages of books and complete forms so that books can be cataloged. Wrap book jackets with protective archival-quality book covers. Affix labels to book spines.  Shelve new books. Inventory book collections in offices. Read shelves to ensure books are filed in correct numerical order.  Create lists of new books.  Interest in working in a library. Ability to use basic office equipment such as computers, printers, photocopiers, and typewriters. Clerical skills.

  • Files Volunteer

Assist with the management of administrative files in Library.  Create file folders using acid-free folders and labels created with Microsoft Word.  Sort papers and folders.  File materials using alphabetic and alpha-numeric systems.  Clerical skills.  Ability to use basic office equipment such as computers, printers, photocopiers, and typewriters.  Willingness to perform basic tasks. 

·         Periodicals Volunteer

Assist with the maintenance of the periodicals collection.  Check in recently arriving periodicals (magazines, newspapers, journals, newsletters).  Inventory periodicals identifying current, titles, title changes, dates represented in Library’s collection, space taking up on shelves, condition, and other information.  Identify and subscribe to local periodicals.  Rehouse materials into archival folders, boxes, and envelopes.  Interest in local history, art, culture, and current events. Ability to use basic office equipment such as computers, printers, photocopiers, and typewriters.  Clerical skills. Previous experience working with periodicals helpful.

·         Photograph Inventory Intern (non-paid)

This position is responsible for inventorying the Library’s photograph collections.  It will involve examining each collection and recording basic information such as title, number, and size, plus information regarding levels of processing and intellectual access.  Knowledge of photographic processes and previous experience working in a archive helpful.  Neat handwriting.  Dexterity to carefully handle fragile materials.  Willingness to perform basic tasks.  Interest in local history, culture, and art.

·         Preservation Volunteer

Apply basic preservation measures to collection materials in the Library including maps, architectural drawings, books, periodicals, manuscripts, broadsides, photographs, and ephemera.  Job duties may include the following types of preservation activities:  Removing paper clips and staples, rehousing materials into archival quality sleeves, folders, boxes, etc., building four-flap enclosures and other custom containers, making preservation photocopies, labeling boxes, folders, drawers, repairing tears and bindings, and interleaving scrapbooks.  Desire to work hands-on with collections.  Willingness to perform basic tasks.  Clerical skills.  Preservation or archive experience a plus.  Dexterity to carefully handle fragile materials. 

Membership

The membership office manages all aspects of the museum’s membership and publications program, including record keeping, renewal notices, and other tasks.  Membership volunteers assist with clerical tasks, including stuffing envelopes for mailings and membership promotion.  Previous clerical experience is helpful.

  • Administrative support

Administrative support includes filing, data entry (Excel and Raiser’s Edge), and telephone follow-up.

Time commitment: Flexible hours, Monday-Friday, around the 15th of each month for

  • Membership promotion

Membership promotion volunteers are responsible for monitoring the membership table during operating hours on the weekend.  Duties include fielding general museum related questions and membership related questions, distributing membership literature, and signing up new members.

Time commitment:  Saturdays and/or Sundays from 1-4 pm, can sign up for specific days during the month.
