Volunteers are an essential part of the Albany Institute of History & Art. We offer volunteering options in every department of the Institute., with opportunities to engage with our audiences in the galleries or from the admission desk, assist in the offices or library, or support the museum's special events. Volunteers are a critical part of making the Institute meet its mission and goals. There are opportunities for short-term and long-term volunteering throughout the various departments: Education, Visitor Services, Development, and Marketing.

Find out how you can participate by submitting a volunteer application form today. We will contact applicants as positions become available in each department.

Docents

Share your passion for art, history, and community! Become part of the Albany Institute’s vibrant docent program and help spark curiosity in visitors of all ages. As a docent, you’ll be a friendly face and a knowledgeable guide—leading engaging tours of our permanent collections and special exhibitions, and creating memorable experiences for pre-K through 12th grade students, college groups, adults, and families.

The docent program offers comprehensive training, ongoing learning opportunities, and special behind-the-scenes access so you feel confident and inspired in the galleries. From curator-led previews of new exhibitions to hands-on workshops on tour techniques, you’ll gain tools to connect meaningfully with the public and bring the stories of art and history to life.

Applications for the Fall 2025 docent cohort are now closed. If you are interested in learning more about becoming a docent, contact Megan Brown, Director of Education, at brownm@albanyinstitute.org.
