APRIL FAMILY PROGRAMS AT THEALBANY INSTITUTE OF HISTORY & ARTALBANY, NY- The Albany Institute of History & Art is offering a variety of family programs in April. Home School ProgramExperience a home school program that incorporates both gallery and studio time. A $10 fee per child includes museum admission and art materials. Registration is required and spaces are limited. Register for all four classes for $35. In the studio use different types of textured papers, magazines, printed-paper, cloth, and paint to create mixed media collage.
Storytelling & Art-MakingA special preschool hour designed for young children and their parents. First a storyteller reads a story in the AIHA galleries and then an AIHA educator has an art-making activity for preschoolers in the studio. $10 fee for adults and children are FREE. Registration is required. Please contact Kristen Schweigard, Public and Family Programs Coordinator, at 518-463-4478 ext. 435 or schweigardk@albanyinstitute.org Saturday, April 14; 10:30-11:30 am Mr. Rabbit and the Lovely Present by Charlotte Zolotow and Maurice Sendak Young children and their parents will hear this 1963 Caldecott honor-winning classic, about a little girl in need of finding a birthday present for her mother. Luckily, she meets Mr. Rabbit, whose heart is in the right place, even if he doesn't always have the best ideas. In our studio, explore color and creating colors of fruits. Using simple paintbrush techniques, paint fruits with your preschooler and place in a paper basket. Saturday, April 28; 10:30-11:30 am I Love you Mister Bear by Sylvie Wickstrom When Sosha spots Mister Bear at a yard sale, he is shaggy and worn and has a big hole in his side. But the old teddy bear captures Sosha's heart, and she cannot leave him behind. In our studio explore using shapes and cut paper techniques to create a paper bear with your preschooler.

In our studio re-create these people by incorporating traditional dress and using pastel, paper and paint to construct freestanding figures. Family Day Hands-on art experiences, art workshops, and gallery activitiesSunday, April 22 Playing with Clay Family Day Gallery Guide Surprise; 12:30 – 4:30 pm Explore our newest exhibition The World and Work of Paul Cushman, Albany Potter with family gallery guide. Prizes will be given in exchange for completed guides. Whistling Artwork; 1:30 – 3:30 pm Join local potter John Vasquez in our studio as he leads a workshop on forming functional ceramic whistles transformed into animals and people. Playing with Clay; 2:30 pm Frank Giorgini, sculptor, teacher, and author - maintains his ceramics studio in Freehold, New York. His "Udu" spirit drums, based on a traditional Nigerian Ibo instrument are the finest of their type in the world and are in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Mr. Giorgini will talk about how he makes the drums and demonstrate how they are played.
