ALBANY INSTITUTE OF HISTORY & ART TO HOLD LECTUREEXPLORING CHINESE PORCELAIN IN THE CAPITAL REGION
ALBANY, NY—On Sunday, April 29 at 2:00 pm, the Albany Institute of History & Art will present a lecture “The Canton Connection: Chinese Export Porcelain” in the Historic Deerfield Collection. This lecture is in relation to the current spring exhibition CLAY CONNECTIONS: What Ceramics Tell Us. Amanda Lange, Associate Curator, Historic Deerfield, will use Historic Deerfield’s collection of Chinese Export Porcelain, and trace how ceramics made in China in the late 18th and early 19th centuries traveled around the world to find their way into homes in our region. This program is FREE with museum admission. CLAY CONNECTIONS: What Ceramics Tell Us showcases the Albany Institute’s rich collections of Dutch Majolica and English faience, Chinese export porcelains, and English transfer-printed tablewares. These material objects speak to us about the past, about distant civilizations and foreign cultures. The exhibition also offers a look at the trade and commerce of Albany from the seventeenth century to the present and the ceramic materials that have flowed into and out of the city, often quite literally on the Hudson River, which connected Albany to the New York City and the rest of the world. CLAY CONNECTIONS: What Ceramics Tell Us, along with PAUL CUSHMAN: The World and Work of an Early 19th Century Albany Potter and CONTAINING HISTORY: Contemporary Ceramics from Regional Potters, comprise the spring exhibition season, EARTH & FIRE: A Celebration of Clay & Ceramics. All three exhibitions will be on view through May 27, 2007. # # #
