ALBANY INSTITUTE OF HISTORY & ART ANNOUNCESJANUARY THIRD THURSDAY PROGRAMALBANY, NY— Stay in town – or come downtown – for evening gallery hours, wonderful finds in the Museum Shop, and special programs during the Albany Institute of History & Art’s monthly Third Thursday Program. On Thursday, January 18, the Albany Institute of History & Art will offer an informal gallery talk of the exhibition, SNOW SCENES By Walter Launt Palmer at 6:30 pm as part of it’s monthly Third Thursday Program. Tammis Groft, AIHA Deputy Director for Collections and Exhibitions, will explore the 10 snow scenes along with a selection of letters, photographs, diaries and other related material, by Walter Launt Palmer. Frequently called “The Painter of the American Winter,” the Albany-born Walter Launt Palmer (1854-1932), produced more than three hundred snow scenes from 1884 to 1932. In his 1910 essay on “The Painting of Snow,” published in Palette and Bench, Palmer who had embraced Impressionism, acknowledged his debt to John Ruskin and the Pre-Raphaelites for influencing his early work, especially the discovery that the shadows on snow are blue, and important original element found in all of his snow scenes. Third Thursday Programs take place from 5:30-7:30PM and are FREE to the public. The gallery talk of SNOW SCENES By Walter Launt Palmer will begin at 6:30PM.
