ARTIST STEPHANIE ROSE TO DISCUSS HER PAINTING ATTHE ALBANY INSTITUTE OF HISTORY & ARTALBANY, NY—On Saturday, May 19, at 5:00 pm, artist Stephanie Rose will present a talk “In the Vanishing Hall,” at the Albany Institute of History & Art, where she will discuss the development of her work from 1963 to the present. Carter Ratcliff, distinguished author, poet, art critic and contributing editor to Art in America, will provide the introductory remarks, and Ms. Rose’s painting NIGHT [IN THE VANISHING HALL NO.1], will be unveiled and join the Albany Institute’s permanent collection. A reception will follow the lecture.
The painting, NIGHT [IN THE VANISHING HALL NO.1], 2006, is the first in a new series of paintings which according to the artist, “are not narrative, illustrational or didactic, but address memory and desire, presence and absence. The paintings serve as an envoy to the viewer, an induction to contemplation and reverie; to dream into one's life through the painting. This work joins Rose’s 1997 portrait of Pulitzer Prize winning poet John Ashbery, both of which are promised gifts of Albert B. Roberts.
Stephanie Rose received her B.S., B.A. and B.F.A. from Skidmore College and has held graduate and undergraduate teaching positions at Parsons School of Design, The Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, SUNY Buffalo, Bank Street College of Education, Pratt Institute and The Studio Program, Empire State College at SUNY in New York. Ms. Rose’s work is represented internationally in numerous public locations including The Neuberger Museum of Art, The University of Iowa Museum of Art, The Denver Art Museum, The Tang Museum, Skidmore College, The Castellani Art Museum, The Reading Public Museum, and the Albany Institute of History & Art.
