What is Ephemera?

According to E. Richard McKinstry, past president of the Ephemera Society, “Ephemera is any printed or hand-written material intended for one purpose and then to be thrown away, such as calendars, playbills or cigar box label.  It is unlike other collectibles which were intentionally made to be kept.”  Interest in the field of ephemera collecting is on the rise, considering that membership in the Ephemera Society has grown from around 100 people in 1980 to more than 900 members today
