Life Along the Hudson
Photographs by Joseph Squillante
Joseph Squillante took his first photographs of the Hudson River in 1975, while at the home of a boyhood friend in Tivoli, Dutchess County, New York.
"Early on, I started getting amazing images, powerful photographs. That's the reason I kept going back," Squillante said. "I'm in awe of the Hudson River. I fell in love with photography first and then with the Hudson River."
Over the years, as he watched the river change gradually from a befouled casualty of runaway industrial abuse to a rejuvenated natural resource, Squillante found that he had also transformed, from a doting portraitist to a passionate defender. He has worked closely with the Riverkeeper organization, receiving its River Rat Award in 1997; with the Hudson River Sloop Clearwater, founded by Pete Seeger; and with Scenic Hudson, which gave him its 2005 Hudson Valley Hero Award.
Squillante continues to work in the medium that first defined his artistry, black-and-white silver prints. His perceptively composed images of fishermen and farmers, bridge pilings and barges, icy waterfalls and bucolic coves, evoke a concurrent sensation of vibrant drama and ageless tranquility. His photographs--part of the permanent collections of the New York Historical Society and the Museum of the City of New York, among other institutions--have been compared to artists no less esteemed than those of the Hudson River School by critics no less esteemed than those of The New York Times.
Although he has seen much ugliness on the Hudson- including chemical discharge, oil spills, and industrial plant explosions-Squillante has kept his lens trained on the river's natural splendor. Squillante said he is elated that the Albany Institute of History & Art has chosen to showcase more than 30 of his photographs in Life Along the Hudson, in conjunction with the Institute's current exhibit, Hudson River Panorama: 400 Years of History, Art, and Culture, which includes several of his photographs.
