The Albany Institute of History & Art is
currently showcasing True Patriot and Pony X Press, two
life-size horse sculptures, to complement the current exhibition
HORSING AROUND: 19th Century Cast-Iron Hitching Posts.
True Patriot, created by artist Rita Dee, and Pony X Press,
created by Michael Lewandowski, were originally created for the
Saratoga County Arts Council’s exhibition HORSES, SARATOGA STYLE 2007.
Dee created True Patriot in 2007 of
driftwood gathered from the Hudson River. Painted red, white and blue,
Dee created True Patriot in honor of her brother-in-law who
returned home from military duty in Afghanistan in 2005. Dee studied
fine art at Bard College and credits her success in “horse art” to
Judy Pfaff, Bill Tucker and Laura Battle. Dee currently resides south
of Albany with her husband, three children, nine horses and three
dogs.
Constructed of fiberglass and painted to
resemble a printing press, Lewandowski created Pony X Press in
2007. Lewandowski credits his influences to his upbringing in barren
country sides of rural Rensselaer County. Lewandowski is currently an
art teacher for the Averill Park Central School District, and lives in
upstate New York with his wife and their two children. Pony X Press
is owned by the Times Union.
