Tammis Groft and Betsy Jacks: Thomas
Cole: Painting the American Landscape
2:00 pm
FREE
Thomas Cole, the founder of the Hudson River School, is the
subject of a new film, Thomas Cole: Painting the American Landscape.
Designed to explore Cole’s artistic process for both the novice and the
aficionado, the film explores the picturesque scenes that inspired his
seminal landscapes. Tammis Groft, deputy director for collections and
exhibitions at the Albany Institute of History & Art, will introduce the
film with a brief history of the Hudson River School of painting.
Following the film, Betsy Jacks, executive director of the Thomas Cole
Historic Site in Catskill, New York, will lead a discussion of Cole’s
impact not only on art, but also on the earliest efforts at
environmental protection.
