Comments: Thom O'Connor has played an important role in the art community of the Capital Region since joining the SUNY-Albany faculty in 1962. This monotype is a characteristic example of the landscape-inspired, color-field abstractions that have dominated his work during the past two decades. Ancient Dream IV is part of a series of six, each of which uses variations on a similar range of pastel colors. Each variation is inspired by memories of atmospheric effects of color and light experienced during midsummer nights, sunsets, or northern lights in Finland. The use of "dream" in the title underscores the mood of reverie and mystery that the abstraction evokes.
