Comments: This sketchbook was begun before Gifford had established himself as a leading member of the second generation of Hudson River school painters. This early sketchbook contains many drawings made on one of the artist's trips through the Catskill Mountain region. All of these drawings are done from life. Like his colleagues, Gifford spend summers in the countryside, gathering raw material in his sketchbooks for paintings he would execute later in his New York City studio.
