Jennie W. Mann married De Witt Clinton Brower on June 1, 1864 in a ceremony presided over by U.S. Minister to Japan, Robert Hewson Pruyn (1815-1882). Brower is listed in the 1860 consular records as a land owner in Yokohama and an employee of an American trade company. We know that Miss Mann was a friend of R. H. and Robert C. Pruyn (1837-1934) as there are two letters in the Albany Institute's collection from Mann to Pruyn. She is mentioned in several letters written home by R.H. Pruyn as staying with them at the legations in Edo and Yokohama; accompanying the Pruyns and other Americans on travels in Japan; and baking a fruit cake for their 1863 new year's celebration.
