This mourning ring commemorates Jane DeWitt (1760–1808), daughter of John and Jane Varick, and the second wife of New York State Surveyor General Simeon DeWitt. Their son, Richard Varick DeWitt, became a civil engineer and an accomplished artist. (The Albany Institute has several of Richard DeWitt's watercolor sketches of steamboats and steam engines.)
