Comments:
The shape of this carved stone pitcher resembles a type of flask known as an askos, containers made of pieces of leather stitched together. Here the characteristic rectangular shape has been translated into stone, including even the bands of thread that hold the sides together. The Egyptians delighted in copying the form of one material into another. There are similar pottery versions of the askos.
