Comments: Here, the artist Frederic Edwin Church depicted a thatch-roofed church building and bell tower, with a priest wearing a broad-brimmed black hat about to enter the door. The scene is reflected in the river, disturbed only by a long boatman in his canoe, while the towering mountains in the distance provide a dramatic backdrop. A nearly identical scene appears in a larger painting, View of the Magdalena River, which Church made during a trip to Ecuador two years earlier. It is thought that this sketch was perhaps made from that painting. Because of the relatively stiff handling, it is unlikely that this drawing was made at the scene it depicts.
