Westerlo farmer David Lester made public notice of his two missing nephews, last seen on September 28, in this broadside issued October 2, 1850. On the same day the broadside was printed the bodies of the two brothers were found not far from the family barn, one covered beneath rocks and brush below a ledge, and the other one hanging by a rope in a tree. Reuben Dunbar, Lester’s step-son, was arrested on suspicion. He was later convicted and executed for murdering the two young boys. In his published confession, Dunbar explained that he felt he had a better chance of getting David Lester’s property if the two brothers were eliminated.
