In 1925, Pullman Porters were organized into the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters. This was the first African American labor union that the American Federation of Labor recognized. The union was led by activist A. Philip Randolph.
Conversations on Freedom is a living theatrical historical play that explores key individuals' role in bringing about this victory. This recorded performance features actors Amelia Paul, Kim Wafer, and Donald Hyman and poetry by Penny Meacham with film production by Collaborative Studios. Join us for the film debut and a short talk and Q &A with the writer/director of the production, Donald Hyman.
Thanks to our partner in this program, Collaborative Studios, this program will also be featured in a hybrid fashion. If participants prefer, they may tune in virtually from home rather than attend onsite. Register online for both onsite and virtual attendance.
This program is scheduled onsite and will follow any updates in the museum’s COVID-19 safety precautions*. If necessary, the event may be converted to an entirely virtual platform.
This program is presented in partnership with Open Stage Media and Collaborative Studios and will be live-streamed. A special thanks also go out to Ten Broeck Mansion, whose site is included in one of the filmed scenes. While the historically based play is pre-recorded, a live Q&A will take place at the end of the session.

*At this time, program attendees age 18+ participating in registered events at the museum will be required to wear masks AND provide proof that they are fully vaccinated against COVID-19.
