Father Time, Your Footsteps Go: Exploring the Changing Seasons - Ages 9–12

Artists have been capturing the changing seasons through art for centuries. Join us as we explore the artwork of Charles Courtney Curran, Walter Launt Palmer, and the Hudson River School and see how these artists depicted the different seasons—what colors they used, the thickness of the paint, texture, and forms included in the artwork. Participants will create a 3D landscape inspired by the artwork at the Albany Institute of History & Art.

Let's Make Art that Pops! - Ages 9–12

Have you ever been drawn to a detail on a piece of art and that section popped off the canvas or surface? In this session, you can make that happen in your own works of art! We will explore the garden scenes of Charles Courtney Curran and add nineteenth-century style 3D paper flowers to our creations. We will explore the paintings of Hudson River School artists and add architectural elements so that our buildings pop off the canvas. We will also explore carvings of Ancient Egypt and build our carvings to add depth and texture.

Albany During the Gilded Age - Ages 9–12

Have you ever wondered what life was like in Albany in the late nineteenth century? How did people dress? What did they eat? What did they do for fun? What toys did children play with? How did life change when electricity was first used? We will explore life through the lens of the paintings on view at the Albany Institute and create items using instructions from magazines printed in the late 1800s. We will provide snacks that were popular in the nineteenth century, so please let us know about any dietary restrictions.

From the Nile to the Hudson: Exploring Water in Art - Ages 9–12

Water is essential to life and has been an inspiration for artists for thousands of years. From Ancient Egypt to contemporary art, water is a recurring subject. Through depictions of water, we can create a moment of peace or a moment of chaos. This week we will explore representational and abstract concepts as we explore and make art inspired by the Nile River and the Hudson River.
