ARTFUL MORNINGS | Summer Art Program 2023

Calling all young artists, ages six through twelve! Join us at the Albany Institute for fun, hands-on activities led by our art instructors. Prepare to learn new things, experiment with new ideas, connect with new people, and make beautiful works of art.

Throughout the summer we will explore Ancient Egypt, fashionable design, watercolors and more! Topics are divided by week and the three-day-long sessions are offered Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday mornings. Projects are inspired by the museum's exhibitions and permanent collections!

Artful Mornings Summer Program sessions will take place Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday mornings from 9:00 AM —12:00 PM and will take place in the museum's Art Studio. 

Registration for each session will be closed at 4:00 the day before the program for administrative purposes.

Refunds: If needed refunds will be issued for a cancellation.

F.A.Q.s

  • The doors to the museum will open approximately 10 minutes before the program's start time.

  • At this time we are still requiring face coverings to be worn for indoor group programming.

  • All required materials are included with the registration fee.

  • Please dress for mess!  Smocks/aprons are available, and you're welcome to provide your own if desired.

  • A snack break will be offered (outdoors when the weather is amenable).

REGISTRATION DEADLINES

  • If at least 3 registrations have not been received 2 weeks beforehand a session will be canceled.

Due to popular demand, we have added a second week of Drawing & Design Artful Morning Summer Camp!

Make your mark as you try out drawing mediums like chalk pastels, oil pastels, drawing pencils, conté crayon, and charcoal. We’ll discover new techniques and explore texture and value scale in our artwork, while using the museum galleries as inspiration!

Artful Mornings 2023 Summer Art Program - Wonderful Watercolors

Wave hello to the world of watercolors! This week we will explore the different applications of watercolor painting, while looking closely at the works of Hudson River School artists, Julie Hart-Beers and William Hart. Like the Hart siblings, we will use watercolors to paint the natural world we can see, but we also will get imaginative with abstract and creative prompts throughout the week!

Join us for a week of creating three-dimensional structures! From model magic to popsicle sticks, foil, and other recycled materials, we will use a wide variety of materials to create our own sculptures modeled after those on view in the museum.

Artful Mornings 2023 Summer Art Program - Fashionable Fabrications

Get ready to strike a pose! This week will focus on the current fashion exhibition, “It’s A Wrap: Two Hundred Years of Outerwear” and give young artists the chance to create while thinking about the stories historic clothing can tell us. We will play with punchy patterns and designs, craft mini mannequins from model magic, and create capes to be worn either as superheroes or fashionistas!

Using historic scrapbooks and contemporary collage as our guide, we will embark on a week of using paper to create both two- and three-dimensional art works! From constructing dioramas and collages to binding a book to take home, young artists will have the chance to experience some of the many unique ways paper can be used to create.

Discover the beauty of ancient Egyptian art and culture! This class will tour our ancient Egypt galleries and have a blast in the studio creating art inspired by what we’ve learned. We’ll discover exciting myths and reimagine traditional art forms that would have been created thousands of years ago, making our own pottery vessels and papyrus.
