Samuel McCleary and John Pierce’s puzzle map of New York State is credited as being the first jigsaw puzzle manufactured in the United States. The two business partners patented their method for die cutting the puzzle pieces in 1849. As an educational tool, the dissecting map received accolades from educator Emma Willard, New York State Governor Hamilton Fish, and Union College President Eliphalet Nott.
