LIBRARY COLLECTIONS

The following resources are available at the Albany Institute's Library:

Albany Institute of History & Art Archives  Includes organizational histories, departmental histories, series descriptions and box and folder listings for all records of institutions which preceded AIHA as well as the current organization. 

Almanacs ­ Dating from roughly 1732-1926, the Almanac Collection includes Webster's Calendar of Albany Almanac and The Evening Journal Almanac.

Architectural Drawings ­ Includes the Albany Institute of History & Art architectural drawings as well as the works of Robert W. Gibson, Marcus Reynolds and the Historic American Building Survey.

Bibles ­ Includes more than 90 Bibles of prominent Albany families dating from the early 17th century to the late 19th century. 

Books ­ The library has a collection of more than 14,000 volumes covering  the topics of the history of the region, biographies, genealogies, local church histories, decorative art references and works on regional artists. 

Broadsides ­ Includes more than 300 examples of such diverse topics as advertising, anti-rent wars, theater and musical society announcements, temperance meetings and commemorative events from the late 1700s -1900s. 

Certificates, Diplomas, Awards ­ Includes marriage certificates, certificates of membership, diplomas from various institutions (e.g. Albany Female Academy, Union College), and service commendations, dating from 1777 to 1950.

City Directories ­  The library holds City Directories for the City of Albany dating back to 1813. Scattered directories are also available for Troy, Colonie and Schenectady.

Deeds ­ A large number of deeds are available dating from 1652-1900. Included are several in Dutch and some Native American examples.

Ephemera ­ Includes more than 1,000  trade cards, menus, advertising pamphlets, guides, invitations, brochures, greeting cards, souvenir programs and other memorabilia from  1830 to the present.

Exhibition Catalogues ­ Exhibition Catalogues are available for institutions as well as for individual artists.

Family Folders ­ Contains biographical information on many families in the Albany and Hudson Valley.

Manuscripts ­ Includes the family papers of the Cornings, the Van Rensselaers, John V. L. Pruyns; business records; and the papers of important regional artists including Thomas Cole, Sanford H. Gifford, Erastus D. Palmer and Will H. Low; and organizational records. 

Maps ­ Includes more than 200 maps, dating from approximately 1600-1967, that highlighting auction maps, military maps and maps of transportation routes.

Newspapers ­ Includes regional, special interest and other newspapers dating from the 1700s through the 1900s. 

Periodicals ­ Includes more than 125 art and history related periodicals and newsletters including many unique to the region. 

Photographic Images ­ Includes more than  85,000 photographic images documenting the history of Albany from the 1840's to the present day featuring the Morris Gerber and Emmanuel Weil collections.

Posters ­ The library holds many WWI, WWII and other miscellaneous twentieth century posters.

Scrapbooks ­ Encompasses more than 100 scrapbooks, consisting largely of personal collections of clippings, ephemeral items, and photographs dating from approximately 1794-1971. 

Vertical File ­ Includes newspaper and magazine clippings and some research papers on a wide range of subjects focusing on city and local history.
