Albany Institute to Offer Free Admission on Columbus Day

ALBANY, NY— The Albany Institute of History & Art will offer FREE admission to the museum on Monday, October 12, 2015 from 10AM-5PM. This Holiday Monday free admission day is sponsored by M&T Bank.

New Exhibition Explores Capital Region History Through 50 Objects

ALBANY, NY—It’s not often that you see a video game and a chamber pot together in an exhibition. It’s even more unusual when both are highlighted as historic artifacts. But the Capital Region of New York has such a varied history that this pairing, along with forty-eight other items, will come together at the Albany Institute of History & Art to tell their stories in The Capital Region in 50 Objects. This collaborative exhibition was developed in partnership with area historic organizations and public input. The Capital Region in 50 Objects will open at the Albany Institute on September 19, 2015 and will run through April 3, 2016.

Anaglyph Exhibition to Open at Albany Institute of History & Art on August 15

ALBANY, NY—Audience is central to Eric Egas’ work with anaglyphs. Anaglyphs, which are three-dimensional stereoscopic images, trick the eye into seeing depth with 3D glasses. Egas’ compositions coax onlookers to participate and enter into spaces created by his oversized printed photographs. His focus on anaglyphs evolved from his work with installations that enclosed the viewer within multiple changing images to evoke imaginary worlds between dream and memory. Seeing Double: The Anaglyphs of Eric Egas is his first anaglyph exhibition of this size in the United States. Seeing Double will open at the Albany Institute of History & Art on August 15, 2015 and will run through October 25, 2015.

Albany Institute to Host Free Lecture on 'Van Gogh and Nature'

ALBANY, NY—The Albany Institute of History & Art is pleased to host the annual Clark Art Institute Lecture on Thursday, July 16, 2015 at 6PM. This program is a popular and long-standing summer tradition at the museum. It is free and open to the public as part of the Albany Institute’s free evening hours, which are held each Thursday from 5-8PM. Traditionally, this lecture has been very popular, so attendees are encouraged to arrive early to secure a seat.

Online Exhibition Provides Access and Context to Famous Hudson River School Movement

ALBANY, NY— “What is the Hudson River School?” is the frequently asked question that prompted the Albany Institute of History & Art to present the exhibition The Making of the Hudson River School: More than the Eye Beholds in 2013. Popular with Capital Region residents and tourists alike, the exhibition featured 96 works from the Albany Institute’s collection of Hudson River School paintings, drawings, prints, and historical documents, along with 38 works from several private collections that had not been shown before in a public exhibition. This exhibition, which highlights such a key component of New York State’s history and the history of American art, has been digitized and is now available as the museum’s first online exhibition, bringing the story of the Hudson River School to greater audiences.

Albany Institute to Host Author Bruce Dearstyne to Talk About The Spirit of New York

ALBANY, NEW YORK— The Albany Institute of History & Art is pleased to host historian Dr. Bruce W. Dearstyne for a lecture and book signing on Sunday, June 7 at 2PM for his recently published book The Spirit of New York: Defining Events in the Empire State’s History. This lecture is open to the public and is free with museum admission. Books will be available for purchase and signing.

Albany Institute to Honor Elizabeth Sonneborn at 2015 Museum Gala

ALBANY, NY— The Albany Institute of History & Art will host its biggest event of the year, the 2015 Museum Gala, on the evening of Saturday, June 6, 2015. The Board of Trustees of the Albany Institute is dedicating this year’s gala to Elizabeth “Betty” Sonneborn for her lifelong support of arts institutions in Albany. Sonneborn has volunteered at the Albany Institute of History & Art since 1940. She joined the Board of Trustees in 1978. Her mother, Bessie Aufsesser, was a devoted member of the Institute’s board before her.

Albany Institute to Participate in Blue Star Museums Program

ALBANY, NY— The Albany Institute of History & Art is proud to participate in Blue Star Museums, a collaboration among the National Endowment for the Arts, Blue Star Families, the Department of Defense, and more than 2,000 museums across America to offer free admission to the nation’s active duty military personnel including National Guard and Reserve and their families from Memorial Day through Labor Day 2015. Leadership support has been provided by MetLife Foundation through Blue Star Families. The program also provides families an opportunity to enjoy the nation’s cultural heritage and learn more about their new communities after a military move. Albany Institute to Host Summer Art Programs for Children

ALBANY, NY—The Albany Institute of History & Art will present a series of summer art programs for children ages 3-5 and 6-12. These programs explore a variety of different mediums and themes and participants are encouraged to apply what they learn from the programs to create their own works of art throughout the summer. Albany Institute of History & Art Receives Highest National Recognition

ALBANY, NY— The Albany Institute of History & Art has again achieved accreditation by the American Alliance of Museums (AAM), the highest national recognition for a museum. Accreditation signifies excellence to the museum community, to governments, funders, outside agencies, and to the museum-going public. The Albany Institute has been accredited since 1980. All museums must undergo a reaccreditation review every ten years to maintain accredited status.

Hudson Valley Hops is Brewed in History and Full of Local Flavor

ALBANY, NY—On Saturday, April 18 from 4PM-7PM, the Albany Institute of History & Art will host the fourth annual Hudson Valley Hops. This fun, regional craft beer and cider tasting and fundraiser for the museum is sponsored by TimesUnion.com/TableHopping. New Exhibition Explores Walter Launt Palmer's Life, Travels, and Artistic Interests

ALBANY, NY— Artist Walter Launt Palmer (1854–1932), the son of Albany sculptor Erastus Dow Palmer, has enjoyed a revival of interest in the art world over the last several years. It’s now common to see his paintings in art magazines and at major auctions across the country, bringing record prices for his oils and watercolors. As an artist who preferred living and working in his home community of Albany, rather than New York City, Palmer carried forward the creative genius that emerged in the region generations earlier with the Hudson River School and his father’s own sculpture. The Albany Institute holds one of the largest public collections of work by Walter Launt Palmer, including oil and watercolor paintings, pastels, and drawings, as well as letters and photographs. The exhibition, Walter Launt Palmer: Painting the Moment, presents for the first time in more than a decade the broad range of Palmer’s work, offering a visual overview of his life, travels, and artistic interests.

Am I On? Open Mic Program to Collect and Document Albany's History

ALBANY, NY— This spring, the Partners for Albany Stories (PASt) invites the public to share personal stories that relate to the history of Albany. PASt partners will host a series of eight, open-mic story-telling events. Storytellers sign up on a first-come, first-tell basis one hour prior to the event and have 10 minutes at the microphone to enchant and enlighten the audience. Stories will be video documented for preservation at the Albany Public Library.

Three Baseball Exhibitions to Open at the Albany Institute of History & Art

ALBANY, NY– Opening day comes early to the Capital Region as the Albany Institute of History & Art presents Triple Play! Baseball at the Albany Institute. Triple Play! consists of three exhibitions celebrating the history of baseball and each contains nationally or regionally significant materials, such as photographs, signed bats and balls, stadium seats, trophies, pennants, jerseys, and more. In addition, there is an exciting roster of related events with guest speakers, family activity days, creative contests, and free admission opportunities.

Albany Institute to Host Advance Release Party for New Edition of Capitol Story

ALBANY, NEW YORK- The Albany Institute of History & Art is pleased to announce that it will host an advance, pre-publication release party to celebrate the new edition of Capitol Story by C. R. Roseberry on Thursday, December 4 from 5:30–7:30PM. Capitol Story explores the history of the New York State Capitol– from its politically charged construction and the destructive fire of 1911 and through its recent restoration. It is a fascinating chronicle of the people involved in this remarkable architectural feat and the new edition ties its history to the present day. This edition includes revisions and additional research by the New York State Office of General Services, a new chapter by Diana S. Waite, exquisite new photography by Gary David Gold, and a foreword by Governor Andrew M. Cuomo. This is the third edition of the classic book, first published in 1964, and it was published by SUNY Press in cooperation with the Albany Institute of History & Art and Mount Ida Press. The project was spearheaded by the New York State Office of General Services.

Archaeologist to Provide Insight into Albany Mansion's History of Slavery at Special Lecture

ALBANY, NEW YORK- Recent excavations and research on the grounds of Ten Broeck Mansion in Albany have revealed outbuildings likely used as summer kitchens and/or slave quarters. On Sunday, December 7 at 2PM, the Albany Institute of History & Art will host Matthew J. Kirk, Principal Investigator and Cultural Resource Specialist at Hartgen Archeological Associates, for a special lecture focused on these findings and the insight they provide into slave/master relationships shortly before abolition. They suggest we reconsider our modern concepts of slavery in the north at the end of the eighteenth century. This lecture is part of the museum’s Making it American lecture series and is co-sponsored by Partners for Albany Stories (PASt). This event is open to the public and free with museum admission.

Albany Museum to Host Festive, Fun, and Free Thanksgiving Weekend

ALBANY, NEW YORK- The Albany Institute of History & Art will be decorated and ready to welcome locals and out-of-area guests to the museum for their “Home for the Holidays” event this Thanksgiving weekend. The museum, which in the past has hosted holiday-themed events such as the beloved Festival of Trees, is rekindling that holiday spirit with a three-day extravaganza of holiday programs, specialty vendors, and of course, trees. Egyptologist to Discuss New Research About Women and Power in the Ancient World

ALBANY, NEW YORK- The Albany Institute of History & Art is excited to host internationally known Egyptologist and author Kara Cooney for a special lecture about Hatshepsut, the longest reigning female pharaoh in Ancient Egypt. Kara Cooney is Associate Professor at the Cotsen Institute of Archaeology at UCLA. Her new book The Woman Who Would Be King: Hatshepsut’s Rise to Power in Ancient Egypt, draws from the latest field research to fill in the gaps of what we know about the famous pharaoh and explore the obstacles that faced women who sought power and prestige in a society that equated authority with masculinity. Cooney will be available to sign copies of the book, which will be available for purchase. This lecture and book signing will take place on Sunday, November 16 at 2PM. It is open to the public and free with museum admission.

Albany Institute Asks Community to Help Decorate Museum for Thanksgiving Weekend

Special Thomas Cole Exhibition to Pair with November Lecture Event

ALBANY, NEW YORK- The Albany Institute of History & Art is excited to announce that it will install a special exhibition of Thomas Cole materials to coincide with Dr. Paul Schweizer’s lecture and book signing at the Albany Institute on Sunday, November 2, 2014, at 2PM. Dr. Schweizer is Director Emeritus of the Munson-Williams-Proctor Art Institute’s Museum of Art and will speak about his new book Thomas Cole’s Voyage of Life as part of the Institute’s Making it American lecture series. The Albany Institute owns Cole’s original oil studies for the Voyage of Life series as well as the first concept drawing for his painting, “Youth.” This event is open to the public and free with museum admission.

Troy Students Present Mayor with Book Arts

TROY, NY- Approximately 650 Troy City School District students from five elementary schools and Troy Middle School have authored books entitled "Describing Your City." Twenty-one books will be presented to Troy Mayor, Lou Rosamilia, on Friday, June 20th at 9:00am as the culmination of the year-long Book Arts program. The Mayor will display the students' work in City Hall.

Albany Institute to Host Author Eric Bryant for Talk about Capital Region Golf History

ALBANY, NY– On Thursday, June 12, the Albany Institute of History & Art will host a local author, Eric Bryant for a lecture about his book, Bogies and Billygoats: A History of the Albany Municipal Golf Course. Albany Institute to Host Presidential Biographer Will Swift for Lecture about Nixons

ALBANY, NY– On Sunday, June 1, 2014 the Albany Institute of History & Art will host a lecture and book signing with author Will Swift about his book Pat and Dick: The Nixons, An Intimate Portrait of a Marriage (Threshold Editions, 2014). Albany Institute to Host Garden Club of America Flower Show

ALBANY,NY- The Fort Orange Garden Club invites guests of all ages to see “Fine Points”, a Garden Club of America Flower Show at the Albany Institute of History & Art on May 21 and May 22, 2014. The Fort Orange Garden Club, a member of the Garden Club of America, presents the two day event which will demonstrate the area’s finest talents in horticulture and floral design. There will be free admission to the museum and the flower show on Wednesday, May 21 from 3PM-5PM and Thursday, May 22 from 10AM-8PM.

New Contemporary Art Exhibition to Open at Albany Institute of History & Art

ALBANY, NY- On Saturday, May 3, 2014, the Albany Institute of History & ARt will open Small and Seductive: Contemporary Art from the Institute's Collection, a new exhibition in a series to highlight its contemporary art collection. The exhibition will run from May 3 until September 28, 2014. It features fifty paintings and sculptures of smaller proportions by some of the Upper Hudson Valley's most ingenious and talented artists.
