JUNE 17—SEPTEMBER 3, 2017
Celebrating its eighty-first year, the 2017 Exhibition by Artists of the Mohawk-Hudson Region, hosted by the Albany Institute of History & Art, highlights the work of the best visual artists in the region. Established in 1936, this annual, juried exhibition pays tribute to the many talented artists working within a 100-mile radius of the Capital District. As one of the longest running regional art exhibitions in the country it occupies a significant role in documenting contemporary art activity in the Upper Hudson Valley.
Jack Shear, this year’s juror, is a photographer, curator, and President of the Ellsworth Kelly Foundation. He works in black and white photography with an emphasis on portraiture and nudes. His work has been exhibited in numerous museums and galleries, most recently at the Whitney Museum of American Art, Yale University School of Art and Le Musée Territorial de St Barthélemy.
Recent curatorial projects include Borrowed Light: Selections from the Jack Shear Collection at the Tang Teaching Museum at Skidmore College. It includes a transformative gift of over 500 photographs, serving as a visual history of photography from its inception in the 1840s to the present day.
In addition to his responsibilities as the President of the Ellsworth Kelly Foundation, Shear serves on the Board of Directors for the World Monuments Fund, the Foundation for Art and Preservation in Embassies and is a member of both the International Council and the Drawings and Prints Committee at The Museum of Modern Art, New York.
This year’s juror Jack Shear, photographer, curator, and President of the Ellsworth Kelly Foundation thoughtfully reviewed over 600 works submitted by 268 artists. Ultimately, he selected 87 works by 32 artists, thereby offering a more in depth view of each artist vision and process. Works by 17 artists received cash awards and gift certificates generously sponsored by Capital Region businesses and arts patrons. Additionally, the Albany Institute, the University Art Museum, University at Albany, and the Hyde Collection have purchased works for their collections.
